Sir Eric Woodward Memorial School is a small K-12 school that offers quality education in a caring environment for both children with disabilities and high functioning students with autism.
Curriculum
Teachers at SEW pride themselves on adapting the NSW Board of Studies Curriculum and creating stimulating lessons to suit the age and developmental abilities of each student. There is a strong emphasis on using multi-sensory approaches to capture student interest and tap into each child’s strengths.
Communication
Promoting communication is a priority for every student at Sir Eric Woodward Memorial School. Most students require additional support to communicate. In conjunction with speech therapists from the School Age Therapy Team, students are assessed and recommended alternative augmentative communication devices or Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) can be incorporated into each student’s daily program.
Community Access
The Community Access Program offers students the opportunity to experience and learn about their local environment.
Students visit local facilities such as the Hornsby Bowling Centre, Kimbriki Recycling Centre, the Wildflower Park, local nurseries and St Ives Shopping Village. At these venues the students learn and practise appropriate social behaviour, enjoy buying goods for school activities such as Art and Cooking and also have fun meeting with their friends and family who often share some of these experiences with us.
The new, smaller school bus that was donated to the school, has been a great help allowing students to access these various places.
